Attic Foam Removal

Attic foam removal is the toughest job we do — tight, hot, and physically demanding, with foam bonded to the roof deck and rafters. Whether a foam job failed, needs to be redone, or a roof repair requires access, we remove attic spray foam and old foam insulation completely and leave the deck clean and inspectable.

Attic Foam Removal From Roof Decks and Rafters

Spray foam on an attic roof deck is one of the hardest places to remove it — tight clearances, working overhead, heat, and foam bonded directly to the sheathing you don't want to damage. We pull cured spray foam and old foam insulation off roof decks and rafters so the attic can be re-insulated, the roof repaired, or a failed job redone correctly.

Common Reasons Attic Foam Comes Out

  • Failed or off-ratio installs — foam that never cured right, smells, or is pulling away from the deck
  • Roof repair and replacement access — roofers and decking can't be reached through a foamed underside
  • Leak investigation — foam hides and traps roof leaks, so it has to come off to find and fix the source
  • Re-insulation — switching strategies or correcting an over-thick, uneven application

Working Overhead Without Damaging the Deck

Foam on a roof deck is sprayed straight onto the underside of the sheathing and around every rafter. Removal means breaking that bond without splitting the plywood or OSB or cutting into the rafters:

  • Foam scored and relieved along the deck line, then worked off in sections
  • Tight detail work around rafters, blocking, and roof penetrations
  • Open-cell shaved and the residue layer cleaned; closed-cell pried off in shards
  • Care around any wiring, can lights, and venting buried in the foam

Failed-Job Redos

When a previous crew sprayed an attic wrong, the fix isn't more foam on top — it's full removal back to clean sheathing. We strip the failed material completely so whatever goes in next bonds to a sound surface and the original problem doesn't get sealed back in.

Dust, Containment, and Heat

Attics get hot and dusty fast. We schedule around heat, run containment so foam dust doesn't migrate into living space below, and crews wear respirators and full PPE. All debris is bagged and carried out, leaving the attic clean and inspectable.

Frequently Asked Questions

I need a roof repair but the deck is covered in spray foam — can you clear it?

Yes, that's a common call. Foam sprayed on the underside of the roof deck blocks access for roofers and hides where work needs to happen. We remove the foam from the affected decking and rafters down to clean sheathing so the roof can be repaired or replaced, then the area is ready for re-insulation afterward.

A contractor sprayed my attic wrong — do you remove it all or just patch it?

For a genuinely failed install — off-ratio, smelly, or delaminating foam — the correct fix is full removal back to clean sheathing, not patching over it. Adding new foam on top of bad foam just seals the problem in. We strip all the suspect material so the attic can be re-done correctly.

Is attic foam removal messier than removing it from walls?

It can be, because you're working overhead in a confined, hot space and dust falls onto everything. We set up containment to keep foam dust out of the living space below, schedule around attic heat, and bag and haul out all debris so the area is left clean and inspectable.
